"FAITH IS STRONGER THAN FORTUNE"
House Stuart boasts fairer skin and an array of hair and eye colors. Often they look slightly older than they are simply due to the weather they're exposed to to toughen them up. The North is a harsh land, cold and covered in snow even in the Summer, and as the lords of the land the Stuarts are rumored to be as stern and cold as the North itself. The Stuarts have ruled the North for as long as anyone can remember. They even used to rule the North as Kings, until Brendan Stuart kneeled and swore fealty to the Tyranians. The Stuarts are a different breed of nobility. Much like the wolves that serve as their House symbol, the Stuart family sticks together, holding an intense loyalty for fellow family members, but a wariness, bordering on distrust, for all outsiders to their House. Not that they see many visitors in the North, considering trade is very sparse there. Travel is harsh, and deters many who may wish to travel in Snowden. Culture there is very stagnate, and Snowden creates a very self-sufficient society for itself, relying on themselves and no one else. They make their profit in timber, furs, and hunting, and see little traffic from those outside of Snowden.
There is a certain fire that can run through the veins of the Stuarts, demonstrated in the late Brendan Stuart, known for his hot-headed personality. Ethan Stuart embodies the cold streak to the Stuarts; calm, emotionally frigid, valuing honor and morality over glory. Justice and honor are two very important qualities in Stuarts, and something they value over many other things. When they rule, it’s just, and often favoring what they feel is the morally right decision. They are very stubborn when a decision has been made, and are unlikely to change their view points, no matter the amount of discussion to take place surrounding it. However, when coming to a decision, they do heed a council of their Northern men, and trust their opinions. The Stuarts also have tough skin, uneasily fazed by much, and if they are, they hardly show it. Their words might be harsh to untrained southerners, but they simply are brutally honest, and find no wrong in saying the truth.
It’s very important to Stuarts that they remain close with their men, and earn their respect. Show face with them, and drink ale with them as equals, while still earning their trust as a leader. Sons must earn their respect in the North, and cannot ride on the coattails of their fathers. If their father was a beloved leader in Snowden, it does not mean that the son will be welcomed with open arms. He must earn their trust on his own accord and never lose it. The men value honor, strength, and courage in their leaders, something that the Lord of Snowden must present at all times to his men.
There is a utilitarian attitude when it comes to the Stuart family, and Northern culture as a whole. Everything and everyone has a purpose, and there is a lack of frivolity in their every day lives. It would quite rare to hear about an artist or musician from Snowden, since the arts do not flourish there. It is seen as unnecessary, and if one were to visit the Keep of Snowfell, they would find the walls bare of art and sculptures. Fashion is similar to this attitude. There is a lack of bright colors in a Stuart wardrobe, favoring more neutral and dark colors, like the grey and black that adorn the Stuart flag. The gowns and suits are plain, with a lack of embroidery gems. All their clothes are made for comfort and warmth rather than style, and often made with wool and furs so they will not freeze. The women were minimal jewelry, as do the men. The weapons they carry are not for show, but for protection and actual use. They prefer the use of hard steel in their weapons, as it makes a finer cut, than the prettier metals that one might dip their blade in for beauty.
A superstition that accompanies all members of the Stuart family is that there must always be a Stuart in Snowden. Most have forgotten the origins of this superstition, and just take it as a rule of the Keep. When Brendan, the last King of the North, left his seat in Snowden for a brief period, it provoked a Tyranian invasion from the South, who threatened to destroy Snowden and its people unless the King kneeled and gave up his crown and swore fealty. Brendan did just that, and since then, it instilled a sense of urgency in the Stuarts to not leave Snowden unattended and unoccupied by one of their own again, for fear of being uprooted from their throne.
Family is very important to the Stuarts, and they do what they can to protect their own. When it comes to marriage, the Stuarts treat it like a business deal, expecting no love or serious affection, but instead looking for matches that best represent Stuart traits and will help keep the family line strong. Historically, Stuarts have chosen brides and grooms from the North as well. It was only recently, with Ethan’s marriage to Kathryn Tripoli, did the Stuarts start marrying into other kingdoms of Thanatos. This has now spread to a betrothal between Sarah Stuart and James Bellamy, and this way of making alliances and marriages is new for the Stuarts. The weddings are always held in the Keep of Snowfell, and a giant feast takes place in its halls. Large, roaring fires warm the Keep, and there is an endless supply of ale and meats. There is no music, but instead filled with roaring laughter and stories from its guests, usually about the bride and groom. Often, the bride and groom don’t even sit together or are in each other’s presence during the reception, preferring to try and enjoy themselves instead. Marriage is consummated that night, usually while under the influence of the heavy ale they drink during the reception. When it comes to childbirth, and as society often dictates, the man waits elsewhere than the birthing room, and it is said that when the Lady is in labor, all the wolves residing with in the Keep howl, welcoming the new member of the family.
Raising their children is something the Stuarts take a lot of pride in. They raise their children in a very hands-on manner, always instilling a strong sense of morality and respect in their children. They do hire septas and nursemaids, but do most of the teaching and caring for themselves. It is important to the Stuarts that their children are not spoiled and take things for granted, and are polite and show respect to their elders. From a young age, they are introduced and familiarized with all the workers in the Keep [goes along with the values they take in knowing and respecting their men] and get to know them, so they can appreciate the things they have and what people do for them. Respect and family loyalty are big in the Stuart household. As far as traditions go, when a boy comes of age, it is his duty to go out into the wild and capture and tame a wolf, which will become his pet and companion for the rest of the wolf’s life. Once the wolf has passed on, they carry a tooth from the wolf around their neck to keep its spirit with them at all times, and eventually capture another wolf. As for the Stuart daughters, it is the current Lord of Snowden’s responsibility to capture them a wolf when they blossom into womanhood. However, since they are likely to marry into other families, it is unlikely they’ll receive another wolf after their first one. Having a wolf is not only a source of companionship for the Stuarts, but it is a way to instill responsibility in the children. They are forced to care for the wolf on their own, and teaches them duty and accountability.
Stuarts have a long memory, and honor the past and the forgotten ones often. They find it disrespectful to forget those who have fallen. All Stuarts are buried in the North, in the large crypt that resides under the Keep of Snowfell. If there is no body, there is still a grave and memorial held for them there, so they may be honored and put to rest. All the former Lords of Snowden have a statue erected in their likeness, and presides over the grave in the crypt. Once a year, a day of remembrance is held in honor of the fallen ones, and gives an opportunity for the Stuarts to remember and reflect on family members. There is a small gathering and feast, though not as loud and celebratory as their weddings and reunions. For their religion, the Stuarts, ever the traditionalists, still worship the Old Gods, while the rest of the Kingdom worships The Seven. The faces of the Old Gods are carved into white weirwood trees that watch over the Stuarts. Recently, they have installed some altars for the new Gods, with the influx of Southern visitors since the Tripoli-Stuart union, though most of the North still prays before the weirwood trees.

"Flourishing in Strength and Virtue"
House Bellamy lines claim dark hair and dark or occasionally blue eyes. Never has there been a blond Bellamy since their coloring is the dominant gene...until Richard's children.
The Lords Bellamy claim descent from the Storm Kings of old through the female line. The youngest of the Great Houses is House Bellamy, founded during Tyranian's most recent war.
The House Bellamy is the Royal House of the Land, after Lord Richard Bellamy, together with Lord Ethan Stuart, Lord Jacob Arrington and Lord Joren Tripoli raised their banners against the Crazed King Tyranian. Richard himself slew Prince Tyranian and avenged his betrothed. Upon the Lancasters taking out the King in the same battle, Richard, apart from leading the rebellion had the best blood claim to the Iron Throne and so he became King Richard Bellamy, the First of His Name. Together with his brothers, the Bellamys now hold three great castles.
The House of Bellamy's animal is the Bear. They treasure it for it's bravery and strength and are either passed down or slay a wild bear to gain it's fighting spirit. They wear this spirit close to them with either the pelt or tooth.
The Stuarts worship the old gods, the gods of the Children of the Forest. These were the gods of the forest, stream, and stone, nameless and faceless, unlike the most now. The Stuarts, as most of the Houses of the North, still kneel before the weirwoods with the carved faces just like their ancestors did for thousands of years.
The present Lord of Stuart, Ethan, was the principal supporter of Richard Bellamy, who had been his foster brother at the Arris, during his rebellion. His father and elder brother, Lord Rickard Stuart and Brendan Stuart, were brutally killed by the Crazed King; his sister, Lillanna, carried off and raped by Prince Tyranian. After his elder brother and father's death, he became the Lord of Snowden and called his banners in rebellion. He was the one who rode into King's Landing to claim the Throne for Richard after the city's sacking by the Lancasters.
When Lord Blackheart rose up in rebellion against the Throne, Lord Ethan was instrumental in his defeat and surrender, taking his last surviving son as hostage and ward afterwards.
The House of Stuart's animal is the Wolf. They treasure it for it's loyalty, pack mentality, and dexterity and capture and domesticate a wolf when they come of age. That companionship remains beside them until death, where they keep a paw or tooth to hold their spirit beside them forever..
"Fortune Favors the Bold"
House Lancaster is renowned for their beauty, with golden blond hair and blue or green eyes.
Fair, golden haired and tall, their women beautiful, their men handsome, the Lancasters claim descent through the female line from the legendary Lann the Clever, a trickster of the Age of Heroes. The gold of Westerly Place has made them the wealthiest of the Great Houses.
The present patriarch and Lord of Lancater was the Hand of the King to Tyranian before he fled King's Landing during Richard Bellamy's Rebellion. Richard's agreement to take his daughter Celine to wife won the Lancaster's and the west over to the Bellamy's cause. Lord Tyrone rode down to King's Landing and proclaiming his loyalty to the Tyranians, convinced their King that he was there to save the city and defend him. It was then that Ser Jory Lancaster, Tyrone Lancaster's son, a knight of the Kingsguard, sworn to protect the King with his life, slit the King's throat with gold gilded blade, earning him the name, Kingslayer. The Lancaster armies laid waste to King's Landing, raping, burning and killing in what was one the worst episodes of the city's history.
Because the Queen Celine, the Lancasters have become very powerful at the Royal Court, perhaps even surpassing the Bellamys. Though, they hold a very dark secret so close to their chests they'd do anything to hide it. Jory and Celine sleep with one another as no twins should to preserve the ruling line with sons Celine's husband cannot provide her. Yet, even beyond that, their father is the only one who knows that Celine is not what she seems. The blood of true Lancasters doesn't run through her veins, and if anyone finds out, their family will be ruined.
The House of Lancaster's animal is the Lion. They treasure it for it's regal nature, power and dominance and are either passed down or slay a wild lion to gain it's indomitable spirit. They wear this spirit close to them with either the pelt or tooth.
"And to the Crying Chicks of the Ravens"
House Arrington lays claim to prominently darker skinned, lithe people who are most adept at secrecy in couriering and relaying messages of the utmost importance.
The Arringtons are the descendants of the Kings of Mountains, one of the oldest and purest lines of nobility. They are the Wardens of the East, a title they have held for three hundred years. Before that they were the Kings of the eastern kingdom of Thanatos.
The Arris is built high in the mountains of the East, made of seven slender white towers so high that one can look down upon the clouds from their parapets. Though small by the Great Houses' standards, the Arris, because of the height at which it is built, is the most difficult of castles to storm, as like to defeat troops by causing them to suffer vertigo if naught else.
Lord Jacob Arrington, recently deceased, childless for most of his life, fostered both Stuarts and Bellamys at the Arris. He had been a second father to the both of them. He raised the East in revolt rather than give them up when the King Tyranian demanded their heads. After Richard Bellamy took the Throne, he named Jacob Arris the Hand of the King and he went with him to King's Landing.
The House of Arrington's animal is the Raven. They treasure it for it's intelligence and shrewd eye and capture and domesticate them to surround themselves with their spirits. Each Arrington has a personal Raven as well that they keep with them always.
"Wounded but not Vanquished"
House Blackheart is known for varying hair and eye colors, thought their skin tone tends to be darker. They also boast impressive suits of armor that they pride themselves on, and have made name of in the Ironlands.
The Ironlands are hard and stony places, a hard place that breeds hard people. The soil is thin and poor and there are scant few crops that can grow there. Fishing and tending goats and sheep are the other manners of getting food. The only other way of making a living is mining, for iron, lead and tin, the only treasures of the Ironlands. In the past, all these things were done by captives captured on the Ironmen's raids on other lands. The Drowned God worshipped by the Ironborn, as told by their priests, made them to reave and rape, fight and plunder, carve out kingdoms and write their names in fire, blood and song. They lived by the axe and sword and took what they will, be it women or wealth. They reaped, but did not sow.
Barely five years after Richard Bellamy took the Iron Throne, Lord Boris Blackheart of Palicides called his banners in rebellion against it, and proclaimed himself King of the Ironlands, perhaps so that the Ironborn could once again return to their Old Ways. Richard Bellamy and Eric Stuart had put down the rebellion, and Lord Blackheart had to bend the knee to the King in surrender.
The House of Blackheart's animal is the Badger. They treasure it for it's stealth and cunning nature and are either passed down or slay a wild badger to gain it's shadowy spirit. They wear this spirit close to them with either the claw or pelt.
"Let Peace be Made Let Justice be Done"
House Tripoli has a unique look, with jet black hair and porcelain skin (think Asian). There is something very serene about them that naturally eludes other races.
The Tripolis never reigned as kings, though they held rich lands and the great castle at Riversedge for a thousand years.
The present Lord of Waterswood, Joren Tripoli, committed himself to Richard Bellamy's cause against the Tyranian King when he wed his daughters to Richard's two closest companions, Lord Ethan Stuart of Snowden, and Lord Jacob Arrington of the Arris. It was in his domain that Richard Bellamy slew the Crazed King, Tyranian and heir to the Iron Throne.
They have always been peaceful, harmonious and rarely choose sides. However, because they are so near the water, they bring in a majority of the Kingdoms' trade and goods. Lately, their culture has been more and more skewed as piracy and greed creeps in, thieving and the like making its way through their traditionally calm ways.
The House of Tripoli's animal is the koi. They treasure it for it's peaceful, serene and quick nature and surround themselves with pools and ponds that hold koi among other beloved fish to keep their spirit nearest them.
"With Virtue and Blood"
House Marlynn, further distant in Donadar, has a distinct culture as well as look to them. They are proud of their dark complexion and equally dark hair (think Indian). Often they dress to accentuate these differences.
Blood, custom and history sets the people of Donadar apart from all the other peoples of the Seven Kingdoms. Nymeria, the warrior queen well known, brought her ten thousand ships to land in Donadar, and took Lord Morton Marlynn to husband. With her help, he vanquished his rivals to rule all of Donadar. Her influence, to this day, remains strong; thus Donadarish rulers style themselves Prince rather than King. Under Donadar law, unique among all the kingdoms, lands, honors and titles are inherited by the eldest child, not the eldest son.
Alone among all the Seven Kingdoms, Donadar was never conquered by the Tyranians. The Tyranian kings were never able to conquer Donadar and hold it as well. It was not permanently joined to the realm until two hundred years later, when a peaceable king married Donadar's princess Myriah and gave his sister in marriage to the reigning Prince.
The present Prince of Donadar, Lord Dunkin Marlynn was the elder brother of Princess Elia, wife to Prince Tyranian, who along with her children was killed. He has an absolute hatred of House Lancaster because of this, and perhaps no great love for the House Bellamy either. Aside from this hatred of the Lancasters, civil strife rears it's ugly head as the Prince's twin children fight for loyalty, following, and the power to rule. If the land splits further from the other kingdoms, they are more and more in jeopardy of outside attack.
The House of Marlynn's animal is the Tiger. They treasure it for it's vigor and independence and are either passed down or slay a wild tiger to gain it's noble spirit. They wear this spirit close to them with either the pelt or tooth.
"We Guard The Way"
Their animal is a great horned owl, treasured for its independence and intelligence. House Locke members pride themselves on being both well knowledgeable and fiercely independent. They have been known to have tempers as well.
"The Hour Flies Like Lightning"
The Tryston's have ruled Highanson as far back as anyone can remember, dating back to the coming of the first men and were originally petty kings some time ago and were smart enough to ally with their conquerors and managed to keep their lands, wealth and other privileges.
The present Lord Martin Tryston, fought for the Tyranians during Richard Bellamy's Rebellion. He and his liege man, Lord Paxton Relwyn laid a siege at Storming Arrow, which was under Lord Stanford Bellamy's command, until the besieged were almost down to eating their dead. It took near a year until Lord Ethan Stuart came to lift the seige. As it stands, the Trystons can field more men in war than any of the other Great Houses.
The House of Tryston's animal is the Falcon. They treasure it for it's obedience and oversight of the world and are taught falconing from a very young age. They always have a falcon or group of them nearby to gain that strength they're known for.
"Wise Like Serpants Forged in Fire"
Currently in exile to Firesbreath.
The Tyranian are the blood of the dragon. Their heritage proclaimed in a striking (some say inhuman) beauty, with lilac or indigo or violet eyes and hair of silver-gold or platinum white.
To preserve the blood royal and keep it pure, House Tyranian has often followed the custom of wedding brother to sister, even though the Seven, which they worshipped, are said to abhor incest. The Crazed King himself took both his sisters to wife, and fathered sons on each. The skulls of the dead Tyranian dragons, nineteen in all before they died out, were hung around the Royal throne room. The Tyranian sigil is a three-headed dragon, red on black, the three heads representing the King and his sisters.
The Crazed King Tyranian, was an evil and sadistic tyrant. The deaths of Lord Rickard Stuart and Brendan Stuart were by his order. His demand for the heads of Richard Bellamy and Ethan Stuart proved to be his, and his House's undoing. His heir was killed in the resulting war and when he opened the gates of King's Landing to the Lancasters, Ser Jory Lancaster of his own Kingsguard slit his throat. His son's wife and children were killed and his last two children sent into exile.
The House of Tyranian's animal is the Dragon. They treasure it for it's mythical nature, secrecy, and fearsomeness and are passed down the large eggs of their parents to hold close that extinct, magical spirit.
"Hardship, Steel, Loyalty."
House Salle has been a loyal banner house to the Stuart's since before the Tyranian's had ever even conquered the seven kingdoms. They make their home on the rather large island in the north. Their primary source of income is furs and fish harvested from the woods and waters on the island, and despite the cold weather, they are largely self sufficient. The Salle's were one of the houses that marched against the Crazy King, under the command of Alistair Salle, who was under the command of Lord Ethan Stuart.
Their animal is the wolverine, a beast native to the island, which is appropriately named for it: Wolverine Isle. A custom and rite of passage for the Salle's is to go out into the wilderness, slay an adult wolverine, and then take it's canine's for a necklace. The pelt is also to be kept with the Salle whenever possible.
The family also has an heirloom sword; it is made of the strongest steel known to man and forged by some of the best smiths in history, and worth a fortune to many. It is a large bastard sword( a sword capable of being used both with one hand or two), and named Fang. It has a distinctive shape of a wolverine's head(made of marble) at the end of the handle.
The sword currently resides with Ser Arthur Salle, who has fled from his home to the realms of the Divikor.
